My experience with collage has taught me that time spent in focused art making builds creative muscle. Time and the practice of creativity are both essential for creativity to emerge and strengthen. At an individual level, simply immersing yourself in an art form or any regular creative practice will help build your creative muscle. The process of making collage in particular, because of its ready access to images, goes a long way in reducing any “I am not good at art” fears, thereby making it accessible to most as an art form.
I often hear people say they are not creative, or leaders say they do not have a creative team. No individual or team is incapable of creativity. It is more likely that they are missing the practices and conditions that allow them to be creative. Using my research on "Conditions of Creativity", teams can experience the creative process and then explore for themselves what might be holding them back and put actions in place to improve those conditions.
In addition to addressing the sense you just may not be creative, I believe there is an urgency to get better at problem solving; I believe the creative process can be applied more systematically to solve our most difficult and complex problems. Can we create the conditions for creativity all around us so that our default is to be more imaginative and to come up with original solutions?
